Deezer starts labeling AI-generated music to tackle streaming fraud

Deezer has introduced a groundbreaking initiative to label AI-generated music across its platform, aiming to address the rising challenge of streaming fraud. Starting this week, albums containing tracks produced by artificial intelligence will carry clear identifiers, signaling transparency in an evolving digital music landscape.

The company revealed that approximately 18% of daily uploaded content—equating to over 20,000 tracks—now originates entirely from AI systems. While most remain obscure, Deezer reports a staggering statistic: 70% of streams from these AI-generated tracks appear fraudulent, designed solely to exploit royalty systems.

New protective measures ensure identified AI compositions receive special treatment:

  • Transparent “AI-Generated” labels on applicable tracks and albums
  • Exclusion from human-curated playlists and automated recommendations
  • Advanced filtering to exclude artificial streams from royalty calculations

Deezer executives emphasize that current AI-generated tracks represent just 0.5% of total streams but warn of exponential growth. “We’ve observed a 300% increase in AI content submissions since Q1,” stated CEO Alexis Lanternier. “While technological innovation excites us, safeguarding artist rights and maintaining listener trust remains paramount.”

The streaming platform’s new detection system employs proprietary patent-pending technology, analyzing audio patterns to distinguish between human and synthetic creations. This development aligns with broader industry efforts as major record labels negotiate licensing agreements with AI music startups amidst ongoing copyright disputes.

Industry analysts highlight the timing of this initiative, noting recent lawsuits filed by Universal Music Group and Warner Music against AI firms while simultaneous licensing talks progress. Deezer’s move positions the company as a leader in balancing technological advancement with creative integrity.
