White House replaces covid.gov website with ‘lab leak’ theory

The U.S. government’s COVID-19 resource portal, previously accessible at covid.gov, has undergone significant changes under the current administration. Visitors attempting to access the site are now automatically redirected to a White House webpage promoting the contested hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic originated from a laboratory leak in China. This theory, while amplified by a 2024 House Republican report, remains scientifically unverified and has faced criticism from global health experts.

Public health resources have been notably altered, with the former covidtests.gov platform—which once allowed Americans to order free at-home testing kits—now similarly redirecting to the administration’s lab-leak content page. The revised White House materials also contradict established public health guidance by dismissing the effectiveness of masks, social distancing, and temporary lockdowns. These claims directly conflict with peer-reviewed research from institutions like the University of Oxford and findings published in Science journal, which demonstrate these measures’ efficacy in reducing viral transmission.

Administration officials have implemented sweeping changes across federal digital platforms since January 2025, systematically removing language related to social equity initiatives. Terms including “diversity,” “racial justice,” and “gender equality” have been excised from official documents and websites through a controversial partnership with private tech entities. Environmental agencies have simultaneously purged climate science references from public-facing materials, eliminating mentions of human-driven climate change from educational resources and policy documents.

These digital alterations coincide with broader policy shifts affecting public health infrastructure and scientific research funding. Medical professionals have expressed concern about the potential consequences of replacing evidence-based guidelines with politically motivated content, particularly as new COVID-19 variants continue to emerge globally.
