‘The Last of Us’ to stream in American Sign Language on Max

In a significant move toward accessibility, Max revealed that its hit HBO series “The Last of Us” will stream in American Sign Language (ASL) ahead of Season 2’s April 13 premiere. This marks the first time an HBO original series has been adapted for ASL audiences on the platform, expanding inclusivity for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. The ASL version of Season 1 will debut on March 31, allowing fans to revisit the show’s post-apocalyptic narrative before the new chapter arrives.

The ASL adaptations will feature performances by acclaimed artists Daniel Durant, known for his role in the Oscar-winning film “CODA,” and ASL performer Leila Hanaumi. Their work ensures nuanced storytelling that aligns with the show’s emotional depth and visual style. Max is also broadening its ASL offerings beyond this series, with signed versions of blockbuster films like “Barbie,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” already available on the platform.

This initiative places Max alongside Disney+ as a leader in ASL accessibility for streaming content. Disney+ previously introduced ASL interpretations for Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” demonstrating a growing industry shift toward prioritizing inclusive viewing experiences. By integrating ASL into its original programming, Max underscores its commitment to ensuring entertainment is accessible to all audiences, regardless of hearing ability.
